DWP Minister shares plans for significant change to the way people apply for PIP | Personal Finance | Finance

Answering a Parliamentary Question by Dr Rupa Haque MP for Ealing Central and Acton DWP Minister Tom Bursclove revealed he was working on moving the DWP PIP The entire application process will be conducted online. In a written question, Dr Hugh said: “I would like to ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions what his assessment of the potential merits of reviewing the Personal Freedom Payments application process is.”

Mr Bursclove, who took up his role in October, explained that the PIP application process is kept “under constant review to ensure it meets the needs of claimants”.

He also noted that continuous review has helped the government department achieve “a more accurate assessment of an individual’s entitlement”.

He said: “Since the introduction of the PIP, we have introduced accessibility improvements such as the Video Relay service and Relay UK, improved the clarity of the PIP 2 questionnaire and expanded the assessment methods to include video. Registration was introduced by telephone, and by request for telephone and face-to-face appointments.

“Claimants will be informed and updated at every stage of the application process, including through our enhanced text messaging service.”

In the UK, PIP applications usually start with a phone call to the DWP, who will check initial eligibility and then send a claim form to complete.

A “PIP 2 Evidence Form” is completed by applicants who then return it to the DWP, along with any supporting documents that can back up their claim.

However, that could change and go online as the DWP plans to introduce a complete “end-to-end digital PIP service”.

He explained: “The scheme introduces a digital end-to-end PIP service, with the initial offering being an online application which will eventually be available as a self-service from GOV.UK.”

Mr Bursglove explained that the department had already conducted a “small-scale trial” of the online application service earlier this year.

He said it will “gradually expand” as the department improves its approach.

Mr Bursglove added: “Designing the future of support: We published the Health and Disability Green Paper last year.

“It asked for views on ways to improve people’s experience of the health and disability benefits system and ways to help ease access to our services, simplify our processes and build people’s confidence.”

PIP is a benefit offered by the DWP to people over 16 and under State Pension age who have a disability, long-term illness or mental health condition.

These can be both physical or mental health conditions or disabilities.

This payment is to help a person cover additional expenses incurred due to a medical condition or disability.

There are two payment rates for the two different components DWP pays claimants, the standard rate for daily living is £61.85 and the enhanced rate is £92.40.

Mobility component, standard rate £24.45 per week and enhanced rate £64.50 per week This is extra if people need assistance.

If a person qualifies for both enhanced payments, he can claim up to £627.60 each month.

Eligibility for payments is determined by a person’s disability or condition and how it affects their life.

In order to get financial help, the DWP will usually need to carry out an assessment to complete a person’s PIP application. This can be done over the phone, video call or in person.

More than three million people in the UK claim PIP, according to the latest data from the DWP.
