Check boiler pressure

Checking the boiler pressure gauge is essential as it can give a good idea of what condition the central heating is in.

BOXT experts said: “If the gauge is in the red zone (high or low), your hot water and heat could be cut off and it could damage the boiler.

“If the pressure is too low you can raise it yourself, you just need to know which method your boiler uses for suppression.”

If the pressure is high, experts recommend bleeding the radiators to reduce the pressure in the system.

They continued: “If it doesn’t work or you experience persistently high or low boiler pressure, it’s worth getting an engineer out to see what’s causing the problem.”

Home insulation

According to BOXT, in addition to wall, ceiling and floor insulation, insulating the water tank and radiators is a quick and easy way to improve efficiency.

They said: “With options like a hot water cylinder jacket, which you can fit yourself and only cost around £15, you can start upgrading quickly. Insulating or upgrading the existing insulation of your attic space can be particularly effective in keeping your home warm.

Isolate the pipes

To avoid the problem of pipes bursting in freezing temperatures, people can take precautions to insulate them wherever they can. It is also known as pipe regression.
