No need to apply as payment is automatic. However, anyone with the above benefits whose housing circumstances change and are eligible, such as having a baby, must inform Jobcentre Plus to ensure they receive the payment.

He said: “The Winter Payments scheme, which provides targeted support to the most vulnerable during the cold winter months, is brilliant.

“But more needs to be done to keep Britons warm. Britain has the oldest housing stock in Europe, which is something to be proud of, but it also means our homes are leaking.

“Even when the temperature is above zero, houses can be uncomfortably cold and difficult to heat.

“While support such as a cold payment scheme can help in the short term, it acts as a sticking plaster on a wider problem.”
