Ultimately, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is a joyfully festive and sweetly heartwarming entry into the MCU that Marvel fans will definitely want to see. Although it’s a bridge between Thor: Love & Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But at 44 minutes, this is a short and sweet MCU offering on Disney+ that will get viewers in the holiday spirit — and sing along to the catchy original song.

Rose Bonaim, Collider

“The Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special, like the recent Werewolf by Night, shows that the MCU doesn’t need entire movies and Disney+ series to tell these characters’ stories, but rather one-off specials that are equally effective. And notable. A quick look at what made these characters so great. Reminiscing is exactly what this team needs, and does a great job of building excitement for their return next year. A heartwarming reminder of how much we enjoy these characters, mixed with Gunn’s great ability to mix comedy, touching moments, and friendship.”

It’s a great entry into the MCU as a whole, while also being a fitting contrast to the more complex and mind-blowing Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. There’s a silly optimism throughout the holiday special, throwing Drax and Mantis into a bar, letting them take pictures in front of the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theater, and generally bringing some holiday-flavored mayhem to Los Angeles. What it mostly works for is that it falls to the actors and they enthusiastically embrace the goofy characters they often play for laughs — which means the emotional moments win out. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is a great little treat for fans of the franchise and the MCU in general, and the team’s upcoming third (and final) film is well worth checking out.

It’s a Christmas miracle Gunn was able to pull off this amazing special and make a third “Guardians” movie at the same time, not to mention switching allegiances from Marvel to DC and landing a gig as co-CEO of DC Studios in the process. It’s not just a great MCU film; It’s a great Christmas special that hardcore Marvel fans and newcomers alike will enjoy. 3” was actually the end of Gunn’s run with Marvel, and this holiday special was the perfect, final film for one of the superhero genres.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special delivers 43 minutes of Christmas cheer, sentiment, catchy musical numbers and laugh-out-loud moments. As with Dave Bautista’s Drax, Kevin Bacon has fun playing himself in a crazy situation, but the real star here is Bom Klementieff as Mantis. James Gunn gives this former background character many layers, and Klementieff brings it all home with a beautiful performance. It makes for a delightful addition to every MCU fan’s annual Christmas rotation.

Andrew Webster, on the edge

So instead of a nice little Christmas adventure, this special feels like a holiday-themed prelude to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (in theaters next May). Perhaps that is to be expected; After all, it’s the Marvel way. But the studio has proven more recently that these shorter, more experimental projects can explode when they don’t have to worry about the MCU’s multi-narrative streak. (The same is true of Star Wars.) But GotG can’t resist the allure of the special canon and ends up a little less special because of it.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is pure joy. It’s an early glimpse of the holiday spirit that eases everyone into the upcoming Christmas season. Its holiday vibe would make for a great companion piece to Hockey, which also made good use of its Christmas setting. It could easily be an annual watch, too, as it’s packed with fun surprises and easy-to-miss jokes. What Gunn and his protégés have accomplished here is pretty special, and it makes for an early Christmas present from Marvel.

Following on from Marvel’s previous seasonal special — the enjoyable Halloween horror Werewolf by Night — this new mini-film mashes up Marvel heroes with genre fun. Gunn’s pop culture blender smashes together a clip from the 1964 B-movie Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, various aliens taking over Earth’s customs in tinsel-wrapped Tinseltown, and even a fun old-school animated interlude. The soundtrack of alt-Christmas bangers includes The Bogs (obviously), Julian Casablancas, Smashing Pumpkins, Hanoi Rocks (for any Peacemaker fans), Lo, Little Jackie and — of course — The Old 97s, Kevin Bacon’s band.
