Disney’s ‘Strange World’ mandate truly made it different

As a reminder of how impressive animation can be and how limitless its boundaries are, Disney’s exciting new film A strange world Makes a big impact. Brand new Walt Disney Animation Studios The movie comes from the director Don Hall (Big Hero 6, Raya and the Last Dragon) and writer Qui Nguyen (Raya and the Last Dragon), who also serves as co-director with Nguyen.

A strange world Pays attention Seeker Glade (Gives voice Jake Gyllenhaal), a farmer, joins his teenage son when he embarks on an important mission to an unknown and wonderful world to help his people. Ethan (Jabocki Young-White), and wife, Meridian (Gabriel Union) – which leads to an unexpected reunion with the seeker’s long-lost father, Jaeger (Dennis Quaid), a larger than life, fearless explorer, long gone.

Inspired by classic pulp stories and more, A strange world As the world in which Glades travels does not operate according to expected rules, it takes the audience to some amazing places befitting its title. Hall and Nguyen spoke to Fandom about bringing this new world to life and making even the starting point a world unlike our own.

Why not two worlds?

From the initial teasers, it would be easy to guess A strange world People from Earth (perhaps decades ago) travel to another world, but that’s not the case. The setting for the film is land Avalonia, a community essentially trapped by the surrounding massive mountains, had no electricity until Churcher’s discovery in relatively recent times. Laughing about the film’s ambitious approach, Don Hall said, “I think the conventional wisdom was, ‘Let’s design one fantasy world, not two,’ but I think we threw that away.”

As long as it doesn’t start on very familiar terrain, Hall explained, “What led to it was that this movie had to be an allegory. I felt we had to create our own fantasy world to be a true metaphor, an environmental metaphor. It’s Avalonia, this kind of awesome, retro, futuristic city, surrounded by mountains on all sides.

Based on the guidance, Cui Nguyen said Hall said A strange world The team said, “He really enjoyed the adventure stories, the specific stories of explorers finding undiscovered places, whatever it was. Journey to the Center of the Earth Or A lost world.”

Hall noted that Avalonia’s designs and how the technology and vehicles they would develop after the discovery of the Seeker were “a lot of early inspiration from early adventure novels – Jules Verne And Sir Arthur Conan DoyleThe adventure novel was born in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I love seeing the pictures from that time when they thought about what the future might hold. It always includes these interesting patterns for flying buildings and airships everywhere. I wanted Avalonia to feel like the culmination of that aspiration that those artists and writers had in the early 1900s.

Live differently

Nguyen said the goal was always to do their title and then some good, and that it never plays safe or familiar, creating the specifics of the world Glades travels through. “When he came into this world, he had only one commandment [Hall] What we were given was ‘Make It Weird’ and that was the most fun. We got to work with a team to create the weirdest, weirdest place we could imagine. He jokingly added, “I sat down with a glass of whiskey and said, ‘Stranger, stranger! Make it weird!'”

Hall recalls establishing what he was looking for, “In the beginning, you wanted to get everybody used to thinking outside the box. In those first few meetings, some of these creatures had a conservative swing, and I wanted to sort out the rules.

Disney animators often use real-life reference points, but Hall said he wanted them to make it more dramatic, noting those early designs, “Most of the time, what I saw leaned heavily on reality. matter. It’s like, ‘It’s great that you discovered this amazing fungus or something from your research. But let’s take what you want, and keep it short. That’s what we wanted this world to be like in the first month or two of establishing that it’s okay to take a few big swings.

Faces off

There are a ton of creatures to be found A strange world, but one thing that stands out about them is that they all lack any sort of recognizable features (and in many cases, not even a head). The most remarkable of these creatures SplatIt can be described as a translucent, blue blob that steals the show several times throughout the film.

Of the overall approach to the creatures, Hall said, “It kind of started with a splat, to be honest, and I wanted to challenge our animators because I like non-verbal characters.” Hall said he thought about a previous film he had directed. Big Hero 6Noting, “PaymaxAlthough he has a voice, he has very few expressions and I thought they did an amazing job with the character.

with A strange world, “I wanted to challenge them further with a character who was faceless and had no recognizable voice. Once we had Splat, we kind of created a world [that]. When you look at Splat, he doesn’t have features, and the rest of the monsters and creatures don’t have features, and I think that allowed us to see them as an ecosystem, and then not expect them to be there. A kind of humor or other personality.”

While they knew that Splad wouldn’t be speaking any dialogue on screen, Nguyen noted, “The big cheater, obviously, is that I would say in parentheses, ‘This is what Splad says.’ I would write it as dialogue for the animator and eventually for our sound designer.”

Regarding the sounds that Splat makes in the final film, Nguyen added, “There is no voice actor for Splat. There was no one inside [recording] All booths. It is actually one created by sound design. The magic between animation and sound really made this character work to let them know what these intentions were. The only trick I gave them was this very basic dialogue written in parentheses. It’s not that deep. It was like, ‘Get off me. you are scared I hate!'”
