Located 335 km north of Adelaide, this small historic railway town is nestled among the rolling hills of the Flinders Ranges. It is also home to the nearby Pichi Pichi Railway, where a traditional steam train snakes its way through the stunning Pichi Pichi Pass.

Another historic railway town, Hawker is known for its rugged beauty and rustic charm. Located 378 km north of Adelaide on the lands of the Atniamathanha Heritage Conservancy, this semi-arid landscape is home to many farms and nearby valleys and gorges, suitable for hikes, tourism and camping.

Visit heritage sites around the city – including historic houses and the iconic railway station complex. You can also visit the hauntingly beautiful nearby ruins, abandoned by settlers during droughts, including the Kanyaka Ruins.

Port Augusta, South Australia

If you want spectacular waterfront views, look no further than Port Augusta. Located 322 km north of Adelaide and home to the traditional custodians of the Barngarla people, Port Augusta is located on the western side of the Eyre Peninsula.

Here, with plenty of places to swim, fish, sail and canoe, Aussie. If you’re lucky, you might spot some of the local fauna, including dolphins, whales, sunfish, swordfish and turtles.

The city has many art galleries, parks and gardens, beautiful places to put your feet up and relax. Garden lovers will want to visit the nearby Australian Arid Lands Botanic Gardens, home to more than 200 hectares of low-rainfall Australian flora.

Kalgoorlie, Western Australia

Home to the nomads, Kalgoorlie is an ideal destination for history and nature lovers. It’s a pretty long drive—595 km, and 6 and a half hours from Perth—and it’s well worth the trip. Families will love the gold mine tours.

But Kalgoorlie’s natural beauty is its real attraction, like nearby Hammond Park, which showcases beautiful native flora and fauna and is home to an animal sanctuary where you can spot emus, peacocks, kangaroos and more. Improve your golfing skills and play a round at the Nullarbor Links, Australia’s longest golf course. Or, take in the sunset at breathtaking Mount Charlotte – which is even wheelchair accessible.

Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia

upright Season 1 ends here—and so does our list. With its soft white sand, dreamy coastline and crystal-clear turquoise waters, Cottesloe is one of Perth’s most popular beaches. Home to the Noongar people and less than 30 minutes’ drive from Perth, it’s the perfect place to soak up the sun.

Whether you’re into swimming, snorkelling, cycling or surfing, there are plenty of options. If you’re after something a little more luxurious, you can even take a scenic helicopter flight to get these jaw-dropping views. Also, if you visit in March, you can catch the annual free art exhibition, Sculpture by the Sea.
