Conor Benn believes the Chris Eubank Jr fight is still on after failing a drugs test ahead of their historic clash on October 8. Penn’s statement follows news that a drug test conducted by VADA found levels of the banned substance clomiphene in his Sample A sample. The British Boxing Board of Control declared the fight ‘banned’.
A statement from promoters Wasserman and Matchroom Boxing, shared by Eddie Hearn, read: “We are aware that a random anti-doping test for Conor Penn conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association returned an adverse analytical finding for trace. Fertility drug dosage.
“The B sample has not been tested yet, which means no rule violation has been confirmed. In fact, Mr. Benn has not been charged with any violations, he has not been suspended, and he is free to fight.
“Mr Benn has since passed a doping control test conducted by the UK Anti-Doping Agency, which has provided the Anti-Doping Authority with the British Boxing Control Board its doping control test for the competition. Mr Benn has passed all doping control tests conducted by UKAD. Both fighters have received medical and legal advice, relevant “Know all the information and want to continue this Saturday’s bout.”
He continued: “I have signed every voluntary anti-doping test. I have never had a problem before. So my team will find out why there was an initial adverse finding in my test. I am clean. The athlete and I will get to the bottom of this.”
Eddie Hearn confirmed that they are discussing the issue with lawyers and that Matchroom is doing everything they can to ensure the fight takes place.
