The World Cup finals in Qatar will finally take on Ecuador at 4pm today. The Middle Eastern country won the right to host the tournament in 2010, but has since faced criticism over their human rights record, treatment of migrant workers and their stance on same-sex relationships.
With 32 nations vying to be crowned world champions, Qatar hopes the world’s attention will now shift to football. Brazil are favorites for the tournament after losing just once since the summer of 2019, while the likes of Argentina, France, Germany, Spain and England also fancy their chances of lifting the trophy.
The Three Lions begin their World Cup campaign on Monday when they face Iran, while Wales face the USA in Group B on the same day.
Gareth Southgate will be without Leicester striker James Maddison as a starter and will have to make a tough decision on whether to keep faith with Harry Maguire in defence. The centre-back has suffered a miserable 18 months on the pitch and has lost his starting place at Manchester United.
