World Cup Live: Spain, England fans banned from chanting after beating Costa Rica last seven | Football | game

Maya Yoshida has told her Japan teammates to be brave if they are to stand a chance of beating Germany in their Group E opener.

The former Southampton defender, who is set to earn his 123rd cap for his country, accepts they may have fallen behind due to Germany’s quality, but Japan want to show their mettle in front of their fans.

“The first match is challenging, winning this group is a very important match,” Yoshida told reporters. “We have to be brave.

“Germany is a great team, it’s not easy, but each one of us is working hard. We have good qualities, we are united. That’s the important thing.

“They have good qualities, pace and speed and technical ability. Attacking opportunities are limited.”
