Arizona election chaos as Republican officials refuse to certify midterm election results | USA | news

Republican Party Officials in the rural Arizona county on Monday refused to certify the results of this month’s midterm elections, though reports said there was no evidence of voting irregularities. The move followed pressure from top Republicans to reject the findings Democrats Winning key races and setting the stage for a legal battle.

State election officials have vowed to sue Cochise County if the Board of Supervisors misses a Monday afternoon deadline to approve the official vote count, known as a canvass.

However, officials had a tense day with deadlines for many districts to confirm their decisions.

Two Republican supervisors in Cochise County delayed the canvass vote because they said they wanted to learn more about concerns about the certification of ballot tabulators.

The election officials have repeatedly insisted that these equipments have been duly approved.

Writing on Twitter, Democratic election attorney Mark Elias vowed to sue the county.

Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs’ office said she would sue if the county missed the deadline.

That’s despite Ms. Hobbs losing the county to Republican challenger Gary Lake.

Sophia Solis, a spokeswoman for Ms Hobbs, said the county had enough information to certify the decision.

While many pro-Trump protestors stood across the US, many candidates most closely associated with the former president were defeated.

Arizona was a flashpoint during the 2020 presidential election because it was a state that was surprisingly flipped by Joe Biden and was the base of a campaign by Donald Trump and his allies who claim the election was rigged.

The state was once a Republican stronghold, but earlier this month Ms Lake lost the gubernatorial election to Ms Hobbs, while Mark Fincham was defeated in his bid to become secretary of state.

Ms Lake and Mr Fincham both blamed Republican officials in Maricopa County for problems with ballot printers and refused to accept the results.
