Canadian spies investigate ‘credible’ death threats against individuals in Iran | World | news

Canada’s spy agency is investigating several “credible” death threats aimed at its citizens, the CBC reported. The Canadian Defense Intelligence Service said it has learned Iranian State actors threaten residents of Canada who speak out against the regime in Tehran.

In a media statement to CBC News, CSIS spokesman Eric Balsam said Iran’s activity poses a threat to Canadian “democratic” values.

He said: “CSIS is actively investigating multiple threats to life emanating from the Islamic Republic of Iran based on credible intelligence.

“Ultimately, these hostile actions and foreign interventions undermine the security of Canada and Canadians, as well as our democratic values and sovereignty.”

It was the first time the intelligence agency confirmed it was conducting multiple investigations into what it described as “dangerous threats to Canadians and the people of Canada” from Iran.

Iran has been rocked by protests for the past two months after 22-year-old Mahza Amini was arrested by morality police and died in custody.

Ms Amini was accused by force of not wearing her hijab properly.

At least 341 people, including children and teenagers, have been killed, according to the Iranian activist-run Human Rights Watch news agency.

More than 15,800 people have been detained, with experts warning that the true number is much higher because the Iranian government prevents publishing real-time information online.

Last year, the Canadian government slammed Iran’s “pattern of intimidation and foreign interference” after US authorities foiled an Iranian plot to kidnap five people and take them to Iran.

In a statement, Alexander Cohen, a spokesman for Canadian Public Security Minister Marco Mendicino, said he was working with allies to counter such behavior by authoritarian countries like Iran.

He said: “We are using all the tools at our disposal and will continue to work closely with our allies and partners to respond to such illegal and unacceptable behavior by autocracies.”

Mr. Cohen added that the Canadian government earlier this week officially designated “the Islamic Republic of Iran as a regime engaged in terrorism and systematic and gross human rights abuses.”
