Covid panic rocks China as new outbreak ‘most complex since pandemic began’ | Science | news

China is on red alert as the country implements “highly complex and strict prevention and control” measures to contain the spread of Covid, which is said to be rapidly worsening as authorities struggle to contain the local virus. Liu Xiaofeng, deputy director of the municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, warned this week that the Chinese capital is currently facing one of the worst outbreaks since the pandemic first began, with authorities under immense pressure to contain the spread.

It comes after three people were reported dead in Beijing over the weekend, marking the first deaths from COVID-19 in six months, as cases continue to rise despite its strict zero-covid policy.

According to the National Health Commission, there were 26,824 local infections across the country on Sunday, close to the April peak.
