Ukraine Live: Putin Arms Belarusian Planes To Carry Nuclear Weapons | World | news

Vladimir Putin has gone ahead to prepare Belarusian warplanes capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

The move raises fears that the Russian president is determined to escalate the conflict in Ukraine.

On Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that it was re-arming Belarusian SU-27 jets with nuclear-armed missiles.

Konstantin Vorontsov, deputy head of the Russian delegation to the UN’s First Committee on Disarmament and International Security, also said Russia would transfer dual-equipped Iskander-M systems to Belarus.

The Iskander is a mobile short-range ballistic missile capable of carrying 700 kg of conventional and nuclear warheads.

The Russian official said: “At this stage, we are only talking about the transfer to the Republic of Belarus of twin-mounted Iskander-M systems with missiles in conventional equipment, as well as providing technology for some Belarusian Su-25 aircraft. Capable of carrying nuclear weapons.”
